FG Denise Comment On Trial Of #EndSARS Organisers

The Federal Government, yesterday, refused to make any categorical statement on ongoing trial of some of the organisers of the #EndSARS protests.

Fielding questions from journalists at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said any remarks on the issue would jeopardise work of various panels of enquiry probing alleged police brutality and violation of human rights in the country.

He stressed that it would rather be wise to await the outcomes.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced that trial of erring police officers began on Friday, October 16, 2020.

An Amnesty International report had indicted the Nigerian Army and police of allegedly killing no fewer than 12 peaceful protesters at two locations in Lagos.

The killings reportedly took place in Lekki and Alausa, where thousands were protesting police brutality as part of the #EndSARS movement.

Evidence from eyewitnesses, video footage and hospital reports confirmed that between 6:45p.m. and 9:00p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, the military allegedly opened fire on thousands of people who were peacefully calling for good governance and an end to extra-judicial killings.

Residents at the Lekki protest grounds told the foreign organisation that soldiers arrived and opened fire on protesters without warning.

EndSARS: Protesters In New York Want SARS Operatives Sacked

Hundreds of young anti-SARS protesters on Sunday stormed the Nigeria House in New York demanding transparency in the disbandment of the police unit back home. The protesters said operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad found wanting should be sacked and not redeployed. Police Arrest 20, Rescue More Victims After Killing Of 22 Travellers In Plateau

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested 20 suspects in connection with a recent deadly attack on travellers in Jos, the state capital. On Saturday, several travellers were attacked and killed by gunmen in the Jos North Local Government Area of the state. The travellers were reportedly passing through Jos when they ran into gunmen who opened fire on them. In a statement issued on Sunday by the force spokesperson, Frank Mba, the police have arrested 20 suspects while about 33 victims have been rescued. Mba also stated that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the deployment of Police Intervention Team to Plateau State to carry out on-the-spot assessment.
