A new study conducted by scientists at the University of Washington Health Sciences says the spike protein of COVID-19 can cross the blood-brain barrier. The Lagos State Government has shut down 12 facilities in the state for flouting the COVID-19 regulations concerning social and recreational centers. Crosso River Statein Cross Commissioner of police Lanre Abdulkadir Jimoh, has been confirmed dead. According to research in the Police command, Mr Jimoh died in an isolation centre in Calabar, the state’s capital, CrossRiverWatch reports. The Nigerian government has ordered the cancellation of N20 fee for the retrieval of National Identification Number (NIN) on mobile networks. A statement signed by the spokesperson for the Minister, Mrs Uwa Suleiman, said the directive was aimed at making the process easier and affordable. "By this waiver, all Nigerians, subscribers and applicants can access the service using the *346# code for their NIN retrieval at no charge for the duration of the NIN/SIM Card integration exercise," he said. Over 300 schoolboys who were said to be kidnapped have been reunited with their families, just a week after the kidnappeing from their school in north-west Nigeria. The boys were dropped off at the state capital Katsina by bus. Witnesses report that  the boys  looked tired and weary but otherwise well. Some were still wearing their school uniforms, while others clutched grey blankets. The kidnappi occured earlier on  December 11th in Kankara town and  was claimed by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram. It is not certain yet that those captured have all been released. Katsina Governor Aminu Bello Masari said on Thursday that 344 children had been turned over to security officials. The Federal government said on Thursday that the price of data has been reduced by more than 50 percent following a directive that the Nigerian Communications commission, NCC, should put in place measures to that effect. Accordingly, the price of data of 1GB has been reduced from 1000 naira to 487 naira beginning from last November. The Minister of Communications and digital economy Dr Isa Ibrahim Pantami who broke the news, said it was in line with the directive he gave to the regulatory agency (NCC) to put measures in place to reduce the average cost of data in the country. “The average cost of 1GB of data has reduced from the January 2020 cost of N1,000 to N487.18 in November, 2020. “This was based on a report by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) submitted to the Honourable Minister following the implementation of the directives,” Dr Pantami’s Technical Assistant, Mr Femi Adeluyi said in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja. The Federal Government is prosecuting Mr Maina on a 12-count charge of fraud and money laundering before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja. Mr Maina was recently extradited from the Niger Republic after he jumped bail and escaped the country. The former pension boss collapsed when his counsel, Anayo Adibe was addressing the court on his no-case submission before Justice Okon Abang. Before Maina’s collapse, his counsel was praying the court for an adjournment to enable him to get records of court proceedings. The proceedings would help him prepare for the no-case submission he intends to file on behalf of his client, Adibe said. But after Maina collapsed, the court rose abruptly to enable officials of the Correctional Service and relations of the former pension boss to attend to him. The matter had been adjourned on Wednesday to today for the defendant to argue his no-case submission and for the prosecution to respond to the same orally.

 Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Thursday presented N10 million each to the wives of six officers killed during the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests.  Sanwo-Olu’s gesture was in fulfilment of his earlier promise during a meeting with police officers at the State Police Command. “Some of our gallant police officers paid the supreme price for our security and safety during the recent EndSARS protests,” the governor said while presenting the cheque to the wives and children of the slain officers at the 14th Town Hall meeting on security held at Civic Centre on Victoria Island. “These are the officers deployed to protect our families from hoodlums but they were lynched in the violence. Today, I am happy to announce and present N10 million compensation through LSSTF to each family of the officers. All their children have also be placed on scholarship up to university level, courtesy of the State Government.”

  Amnesty International is urging the United Nations Security Council to renew its arms embargo on South Sudan, saying violence, atrocities and war crimes against civilians have quadrupled this year despite a cease-fire and formation of a unity government in February. The Security Council first imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan in May 2018, which it renewed a year later and again in May 2020.   THE Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday fixed February 24, 2021 for the hearing of a N100m suit filed by a whistleblower, George Davidson, against the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission. The plaintiff had filed the fundamental human rights enforcement suit following his alleged illegal detention by the ICPC from October 13 to 31, 2020. He said he was detained following a whistleblower’s information he claimed to have given the commission about a Grade Level 9 federal civil servant, Regina Dominic. The commission had detained him on the basis that the information he gave was false. Part of the respondents sued in the suit are, ICPC, ICPC’s Director of Operations, Akeem Lawal, as well as some ICPC operatives – Offili Innocent, Maman Kuru, Kontagora Khadijat. The other respondents are Regina Dominic and Attorney General of the Federation. The plaintiff, through his lawyer, A.O Osawaru, argued in his suit that no court had found him guilty of any offe

  Erinfolami, a police inspector, was said to have been accidentally shot in October by one of his colleague who was trying disperse protesting crowd at the Area C police command in the Surulere area of Lagos. Okechukwu Iloamuazor, a driver who was held in traffic in the area, was also killed by stray bullet fired by the policemen on that day. Nigerians across the country had taken to the streets in October to protest police brutality. In a petition through Jiti Ogunye, human rights lawyer, Erinfolami family accused the police authorities of issuing a false and cruel statement, claiming Erinfolami and Iloamuazor were killed by irate protesters who invaded and attacked the said Area C police command. The family said information from witnesses showed that after the shooting of Erinfolami, his colleagues did not come to his aid until he bled to death. The family also accused the police of not communicating with them and failing to send representatives to them over the death of the 38 year

  The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, alleged that his Ebonyi State counterpart, David Umahi, left the Peoples Democratic Party to pursue a presidential bid. This is as Umahi at a media briefing in Abakaliki on Tuesday said his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, was premised on his conviction that the All Progressives Congress was more amenable to working in the interest of the South East zone. Umahi, explained that he was leaving the PDP because of the injustice meted out to the people of the zone despite several years of loyalty.
