Stephen Ukenna, Covenant University Lecturer Arrested For Defiling Student

 The Police have arrested a lecturer in the Department of Business management at the Covenant University Ota, Ogun State, Dr. Stephen Ukenna, for allegedly raping 17-year-old student of the institution. The 41-year-old lecturer was arrested following a complaint lodged at Ota Area command by the parents of the victim. The parents reportedly told the police that the daughter informed them over the phone that the lecturer raped her in his office. They quoted the daughter to have said that the suspect invited her to the office under the pretext of a surprise birthday party for her by a friend. According to them, on getting to the lecturer’s office, he locked the office door and forcefully had sex with her on top of the table in his office. Judge Pardons Rapist After Conviction

A judge of the Ekiti State High Court, Ado-Ekiti, on Wednesday, granted pardon to a rapist, Dennis Kiyede, just after he convicted him for raping a 16-year-old girl. John Adeyeye, the judge, said he pardoned Mr Kiyede because of his ill health. The accused was being prosecuted by the police on a one-count-charge of rape of his 16-year-old cousin. In his judgment, Mr Adeyeye noted that the prosecution had established that the offence of rape was committed by the accused person. “I find him guilty of the offence as charged and he is accordingly convicted,” he said. The judge, however, went on to pardon the convicted man, citing health reasons. “It is obvious that the accused is very ill as he could no longer stand on his feet,” the judge said. “The accused person, who has been in custody since he was arrested, must have learnt his lessons. “In the circumstances, the accused person is hereby cautioned and discharged.” According to the charge sheet, the offence was committed on or about t...

Nigeria Declares ‘State Of Emergency’ On Rape And Sexual Assault

In June, Nigeria declared a state of emergency on rape and sexual violence in all 36 Nigerian states. Earlier that month, activists from women-led groups marched and sent a memo to Nigeria’s House of Representatives, demanding Nigeria adopt and properly implement the 2015  Violence Against Prohibition Person’s Act (VAPP). This was triggered by brutal rape cases reported in May and June:  Barakat Bello  was raped and killed in her home;  Vera Uwa Omozuwa  was killed in her church in Benin City, southern Nigeria; and a  12-year-old girl  was raped by 11 men in  Jigawa, northern Nigeria .
