EndSARS: Akwa Ibom Extends Curfew

The curfew in Akwa Ibom State which ought to have ended by 12 noon on Friday has been extended to Saturday, October 24, the state government has said.

“Due to developing situations being monitored by the state government and security agencies and the inevitable need to protect citizens and property, based on overriding the public interest, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel has extended the curfew, which was initially due to expire by noon of 23rd October, 2020 till 7am on Saturday, 24th October, 2020.

“This curfew has statewide effect,” the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong, said in a statement, Friday morning.

“Expectedly, there will be a total cessation of movement, except for those on essential duties, who must show a proper identification.

“All law abiding citizens are advised to remain at home, as security agencies have been briefed to strictly enforce this order,” the statement added.

There are reports that hoodlums attacked a bank building and also set a tertiary hospital, Ibom Specialist Hospital, Uyo, ablaze Thursday night.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akwa Ibom State has condemned the attack which it said was “uncalled for and meaningless”.

“Certainly, this is not the way to go. It is a classic case of blaming the doctor for the disease of the victim,” the NUJ said in a statement by its secretary, Dominic Akpan.

937 People Killed In Attacks In Kaduna In 2020

At least 937 people died in violent attacks and mass atrocities in Kaduna State last year, an annual security report by the state government has shown. Amazon To Open African Headquarters In South Africa

Amazon has concluded plans to open its African headquarters in South Africa with a real estate investment of over R4 billion. Authorities in Cape Town said Amazon would be occupying a new development in River Club, a prime section of the city, local media reported. The 15-hectare parcel of land will cost R4 billion and include two precincts. Authorities said the first precinct of 60,000sqm would occupy different layers of development, while the second section of 70,000 will hold Amazon headquarters in Africa. $114.28m COVID-19 loan: SERAP asks World Bank to make Nigeria ‘publicly commit to transparency’

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) has sent an open letter to the World Bank President Mr David Malpass, urging him to use his “good offices to encourage the Federal Government and 36 state governments to publicly commit to transparency and accountability in the spending of the $114.28m credit and grant for COVID-19, which the Bank’s Board of Directors recently approved for Nigeria, including by publishing details on a dedicated websit".
