It's unfair to pay politicians more salaries than judges -SERAP

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has said that it is unfair to pay the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), governors, and lawmakers huge salaries, then pay judges less.

The group also urged Chairman, Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Elias Mbam, to “urgently review upward the remuneration, allowances, and conditions of service for Nigerian judges, and to review downward the remuneration and allowances of high-ranking political office-holders in order to address the persistent poor treatment of judges, and to improve access of victims of corruption to justice.”

SERAP also urged him “to send your review and recommendations to the National Assembly for appropriate remedial and legislative action, as provided for by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).”

SERAP said the letter followed the nationwide industrial action by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria over financial autonomy for the judicial arm of government.

Air Force bombs wedding guests in Niger State

  A Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet has shelled a wedding venue, killing some wedding guests at a remote community in Niger State. The airstrikes were targeting bandits and insurgents in the area. The airstrike in which some armed bandits and cattle rustlers were killed took place at Genu town in Niger State,  it was reported on Saturday, adding that “ One of the bombs allegedly strayed at a wedding party in an adjoining village .” “ We saw the small aircraft dropping bombs from afar on the location of fleeing bandits and one of the explosives hit a wedding event in Argida Village. Two villagers were also killed, unfortunately. We gathered that several others, who were guests at the wedding feast, sustain injuries,”   A witness narrated In April, the Air Force in an airstrike killed some Nigerian soldiers, mistaking them for insurgents.
