Most Hand Sanitizers are Potentially Toxic - FDA

The Food and Drug Administration's list of potentially toxic hand sanitizers continues to grow, with the agency warning of more products tainted with methanol.

The FDA's  recent warning to consumers and health care services includes hand sanitizers labeled as containing ethanol, but tested positive for methanol. Also known as wood alcohol, This methanol can be Toxic when absorbed into the skin and deadly if swallowed. 

The regulatory agency has mentioned about 75 list  of sanitizers for consumers to avoid — some of which have already been recalled and some the FDA is recommending be recalled — for containing the potentially fatal substance."The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations and death," :FDA . 

Young children who accidentally ingest these products, as well as adolescents and adults who drink them as an alcohol substitute, are most at risk of methanol poisoning, according to the agency.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) has sent an open letter to the World Bank President Mr David Malpass, urging him to use his “good offices to encourage the Federal Government and 36 state governments to publicly commit to transparency and accountability in the spending of the $114.28m credit and grant for COVID-19, which the Bank’s Board of Directors recently approved for Nigeria, including by publishing details on a dedicated websit". SERAP also urged Mr Malpass to “put pressure on authorities and the 36 state governors to accept voluntary scrutiny by Nigerians and civil society regarding the spending of the funds and use of the resources, including on how they will spend the money to buy medical equipment, and improve access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene" The World Bank Board of Directors last Friday approved a $114.28 financing “to help Nigeria prevent, detect and respond to the threat posed by COVID-19 with a specific focus on state level...
