Cotonou, Benin — December 7, 2025 The government of Benin says it has foiled an attempted coup after a group of soldiers stormed the national broadcaster on Sunday morning, declared the removal of President Patrice Talon, and announced the dissolution of all state institutions. According to the Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, the mutiny was carried out by a “small faction” of soldiers who were quickly overwhelmed by loyalist forces. “The situation is under control,” Seidou said, adding that President Talon is “safe and in a secure location.” The coup plotters, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), had used state television to announce that they had taken power. Benin Republic was thrown into uncertainty on Sunday after a group of soldiers appeared on state television to announce that they had overthrown President Patrice Talon and dissolved all government institutions. The soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), declared that they had taken control of the country, citing the need to “refound the nation” and restore order. Governor Charles Soludo has come under fire after he, in a recent viral video, referred to the PDP presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar who visited the state, as "one of the two front-runners" for the 2023 presidential election. This is coming just weeks after the governor in an interview said the investments made by Peter Obi in Anambra state while he was governor are worth nothing today. The Women Leader of the Edo State Chapter of Peter Obi (@PeterObi) National Support Group, Helen Taiwo Augustine, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen. She was kidnapped on Wednesday, 7th of December, 2022 at Ibillo in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. As a grassroot mobilizer, it is believed her kidnap can't be unconnected to her influence for the party. She has been credited with being the brain behind the party's followership in the Edo North Senatorial District. This is coming few weeks after the party's Women Leader in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Victoria Chintex, was murdered.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Monday, commenced his presidential campaign in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, with a promise to rescue Nigeria from insecurity and bad economy, and to unite the northern and southern parts of the country. This was as five PDP governors were absent at the commencement of the campaign, which held at the Nests of Champion International Stadium, Uyo, the state capital. The PDP governors that failed to turn up at the rally included the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpaezu, and Enugu State Governor, Ugwuanyi Ifeanyi. The celebration of JIC Igbe's burial has formally kicked off with IKAPTANG community in Ishibohr, Ogoja blazing the trail.  An educationist and former Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, Bayelsa and Ebonyi States, Chief Joseph Iyambe Cyril Igbe has passed on at the age of 86. A native of Nkim in Ogoja Local Government Area, Mr. Igbe, fondly referred to as Chief JIC Igbe, passed away on Monday. Asides being INEC REC in three States, he served as the first black principal of MaryKnoll College, Okuku and two other schools.
